Good day students, today we'll discus on percentages and how to understand the basic concepts about it. Percentages can be applied in real life, people still get it confused about percentages and how to solve them, but here i will show the scoop on how to deal with this kind of mathematics any time given.
Examples
1. A pupil got 120 out of 200 marks in a test. Change this mark to a percentage.
120
Percentage mark of ---------
200
120 / 2 100
= ---------------- x -------------
200 / 2 1
60
---------- = 0.6
100
= 0.6 x 100
= 60%
Do not forget total of percentage is always 100, put the given number smallest on top and the biggest bottom and raise 100 by 1, look for a common divisor to divide the top and the bottom number to last term.
2. The marked price of a chair is N6 000.00. Its sales price N 4 500.00.Find the reduction as a percentage of the marked price
Reduction = N 6 000 - 4 500 = N 1 500
Reduction N 1 500
-------------------- % -------------- x 100
Marked price N 6 000
This means
1 500 / 1 500 = 1
6 000 / 1 500 = 4
1 100
= ------------- x ------------
4 1
1 x 100 =100
4 x 1 4
then 100 / 4 =25
discount 25 %
This tells you how to calculate a any discount of any particular goods... hope you really enjoy this...
Exercise 1
Change these marks to percentages
1. 80 out of 100
2. 140 out of 200
3. 120 out of 250
4. 6 out of 15
Solution
1. 80 out of 100
80
= ------------ 0f 100
100
80 / 4 = 20
100 / 4 = 25
20/ 5 = 4
25 / 5 =5
4 100
---------- x ----------
5 1
20 x 4 = 80
80 %
2. 140 out of 200
140
= --------------
200
140 / 4 = 35
200 / 4 = 50
35 / 5 = 7
50 / 5 = 10
7
= --------- 0f 100
10
7 100
=------- x ------------
10 1
10 x 7 = 70
70 %
Brake it down
100/ 10 = 10
10 x 7 = 70
3. 120 out of 250
120
-------------- x 100
250
60 / 5 = 12
125 / 5 = 25
100
----------- = 4
25
4 x 12 = 48
There 120 out of 250 = 48 %

4. 6 out of 15
6
------- of 100
15
6 100
--------- x -----------
15 1
6 / 3 = 2
15 / 3 = 5
2
------- x 100
5
100
---------- = 20
5
20 x 2 =40
There 4. 6 out of 15 = 40 %
Can you see how i solve the above mathematics, just look for a common divisor that will run both the bottom and top number that's all. If you want to solve these follow my examples and you're good to go.
Now Solve These
a. 100 out of 200
b. 90 out of 200
c.170 out of 200
d. 40 out of 100
Find the reduction as a percentage of the marked price below
1. 1000 of 800
= 1000 - 800
= 200
200 100
-------- x ----------
1000 1
200/200 = 1
1000 / 200 = 5
1
-------- x 100
5
100/5 = 20
20 x 1 = 20
= 20 %
2. 3000 - 2700
= 3000 - 2700
= 300
300
--------- x 100
3000
300/300 = 1
3000 / 300 = 10
1
------ x 100
10
100 / 10 = 10
10 x 1 = 10
10 %
