Good day my pupils and my friends in this post i will show you how to calculate distances in mathematics. In this particular math we shall learn how to calculate any movement made by us or by driving a motor car or even bicycle. In daily life we all make movement from one place to other, this can be done by working or by motor car, motorcycle and by aeroplane. To calculate this kind of mathematics you must be familiar with the formula involved.
Formulas
Distance km
To find average speed = ----------------------
Time Taken(hr)
Distance (km)
To find Time Taken = -----------------------
Average Speed (km/h)
To find Distance = Speed x Time taken
Note:
If you are asked to find the average speed of kilometer per hour, you will be given distance(km) and time taken(hr),then just use the formula given.
If you are asked to find the time taken, you will be given the distance(km) and the average speed(km/h)
just use the formula.
If you are asked to find the distance(km),you will be given the average speed and the time taken, just use the formula.
Example 1
A train takes 5 hrs (hours) to travel from town A to town B,which are 500 km.What is the average speed of the train?
Distance
To find average speed(km/h) = ----------------------
Time Taken(hr)
500 km
= ----------------
5 hrs
= 100 km/h
This means the speedometer of that train is 100km/h. First write the formula to remember what to do.
Measuring Unit for average speed is km/h.
Measuring Unit for time is h.
Measuring Unit for Distance is km.
Example 2
Ukeme ran 40 km in 4 h.After a rest, he cycled 30 km in the next 2 hrs.Find
a) his average speed when he ran.
b) his average speed when he cycled.
c) his average speed for the whole journey.
Solution
a) his average speed when running.
Distance
Average speed = -------------------
Time
40 km
= ------------------
4 hrs
= 10 km/h
b) his average speed when he cycled.
Distance
Average speed while cycling --------------------
Time taken
30 km
= -----------------
2
= 15 km
Total distance for the whole journey
( 40 + 30 ) km 70 km
--------------------- = --------------
( 4 + 2 ) hrs 6 hrs
2
= 11 -------- km/h
3
1
A horse can run 162.5 km in 2------- h. What is its speed.
2
Distance
Average Speed = ----------------------
Time taken
162.5 km
= ----------------------
5
---------------- hrs
2
162.5 km
= --------------------
5
= 32.5 x 2
= 65 km/h
1
Sienna covered 90 km in the first place 1------h and 50 km in the next 30 mins
2
Find his average speed for:
a) the first part journey.
b) the second part of the journey.
c) the whole part of the journey?
Solution
a) the first part journey
Distance traveled
Speed covered = ------------------------
Time taken
90 km
= ----------------
3
--------- h
2
90 km 2
= ------------- x -----------
3 1
= 30 km/h
b) the second part of the journey.
Distance traveled
Speed covered = ------------------------
Time taken
50 km
= --------------------
1
-------------
2
50 km 2
= ------------------ x ------------
1 1
= 100 km/h
c) the whole part of the journey?
(90 + 50 ) km
= ----------------------
2 hrs
140
= ------------
2
= 70 km/h
Note: 30 mins is half a minutes 1/2
Activities
1) The distance between town A and town B is 300 k. A car takes 4 hrs to travel from town to the other. What is the average speed of the car?
2) lorry travels 76 km in 1 h and a bus travels 1:30 h .Which vehicle is travelling at a faster speed?
3) An aeroplane traveled to London at 839 km/h for 4 hrs. What is the distance covered the plane?
4) Kufre left Kaduna and drove at an average speed of 80 km/h for 3 hours 30 minutes. How far away from Kaduna was he?
Withe my method you can deal with this mathematics if only you follow up the formula.Let me know if you have any issue.
