Good day pupils, today you're will know how to measure any given objects and their measurement unit. If you will writing common entrance examination in Nigeria (usually called Primary 6 exams) you have to pay attention to this lesson.
Measurement is all about distance of side of object or distance from one place to another. There i will make everything clear to you, each of the measurement unit will be listed and how to convert them to a particular unit. Now let me list out the measurement unit and they are --
1. cm are tens , 12cm, 34 cm 78 cm 10 cm 52cm etc.. these numbers belong to centimeters
2. meters are hundreds , 123m , 421m, 123m etc.. these numbers belong to meters...
3. kilometers are thousand longest measurement units they are .. 2352 kilometers, 2703 kilometers , 2518 kilometers and more...
Hope you understand what i mean, if a rod is 127 cm long. We can write 127 cm as 1m and 27 cm. can also be written as 1.72m. We separate a centimeters from the meters with the decimal point.
Study the following length
Example1
This is obvious, when changing meters to cm, expand the given numbers first, then divide the hundreds by 100 also the tens with 100
Example 2
100 100
= 2 + 0 .06
= 2.06 m
Exercise
Lets change the following centimeters to m
1. 11 cm
4. 234 cm
Solution
1. 11 cm
11 cm = 0 cm +0. 11 cm
= 0.11 meters
2. 234 cm
234cm = 200 cm + 42 cm
------- + --------
100 100
= 2 + 0.42
= 2. 42 m.
Now let change the following meters to cm
1. 0.34m
2. 0.07m
3. 4.23m
Solution
1. 0.34m
0.34m = 0 . 34 x 100
= 34 cm
this means 0.34 x 100 because after the decimal point is 34 which is hundredth so we multiply it by 100 also if 1.6 x 10 = 16, after the decimal point is 6 which is tenth.
2. 0.07m
=0.07m x 100
= 7cm
3. 4.23m
4.23m = 4.23 x 100
= 423 cm
Do not forget that 2 and 3 are in place of hundredth so they will moved to meet 4, as in 423.
but we ignore the dot.
